General description of Make and/or Model of this Motorcar:
The 488 model series was in production between 2015 and 2019 and marked the first turbocharged Ferrari V8 since the legendary the F40. As stricter emissions in all key sales markets heralded the inevitable migration to smaller more efficient turbocharged engines, the launch of the 488 GTB produced a new records in specific output per litre for Ferrari roadcars - resulting in 661 hp and 567 lb/ft of torque for the 3.9 litre V8 with a top speed of 205 mph and 0-124 mph in 8.3 seconds. The body of the 488 produced 50% more downforce and less aero drag than the preceeding 458 model and was a big commercial success for Ferrari.
A Spider derivative featured a similar folding roof mechanism to the 458 Spider and the nominal additional 50kg weight penalty over the Berlinetta model made a negligible effect on performance figures, the top speed redcued by 3mph to 202 and acceleration figures more or less indentical.
The Pista derivative of the model followed a familiar Ferrari recipe of producing the ultimate evolution of the model towards the end of production with a big step in engine performance and sophisticated aerodynamic enhancements to produce a significant performance jump. The engine was not a simple "turn up the boost" tuning exercise but a comprehensive redevelopment with the addition of 50% new components, resulting in a 50 hp increase leading to a new headline figure of 710 hp. Sophisticated aerodynamic enhancements included the new "S-duct" integrated into the 488’s nose, which combined with new winglets and underbody front diffusers, contributed to significantly higher front downforce than the 488 GTB. The Pista rear spoiler featured active three flaps within the rear diffuser (derived from the 488 GTE Le Mans racer) which opened and close actively, for drag reduction in a straight line or increased downforce during cornering or braking. If all the "lightweighting" options were ticked - the Pista could shed 90kgs over the standard GTB.
Predictably this limited edition model was sold out before launch and became an instant classic with an estimate of a production run of 2400.
The Pista Spider was built in even more limited numbers than the Pista Berlinetta - estimated to be just around 1100 - but not officially confirmed by Ferrari. Do not mistake the 50th soft top Ferrari model to be made, as a "soft" option...There is no discernible performance deficit with the this alfresco variant - in fact with the roof down the Pista performance potential is even more visceral and there is a case to be said the closed Pista is the more subdued option. The Pista Spider provides unfiltered access to one of the best exhaust noises produced from a twin turbo V8 - there is definitely an F40 vibe channelling in there...
Essentially the rarer Pista Spider is a full fat Pista without a roof with no performance compromise. Today's market speaks on this model's desirability with a typical premium of 40% over the Coupe derivative.
We'll leave the last word to Evo Magazine - Open-top 488 Pista demonstrates there’s nothing to lose when you open the roof.
