General description of Make and/or Model of this Motorcar:

The Ferrari F1 team's record 16th Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship would be marked by one of the greatest roadgoing supercars of the modern period, and the fastest open Ferrari to ever lap the firm’s Fiorano test track: the Scuderia Spider 16M.

The new car was heavily based on the hardcore "Scuderia" version of the firm’s flagship F430 supercar. The exclusively open-topped 16M borrowed the closed car’s scintillating 503 horsepower 4.3-litre V-8 powerplant, which was further refined with redesigned pistons and a higher compression ratio and its F1-superFast2 six-speed gearbox. The model employed F1 technology including an E-Diff active differential and F1-Trac traction control, plus a manettino on the steering wheel developed with input from seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher.

The resulting 510 hp and dry weight of 1340 kgs meant a power to weight of 2.6 kg/hp - 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 194 mph.

Advances in construction tchnology meant the 16M featured increased strengthening and stiffening of the F430 monocoque to compensate for the lack of roof - resulting in no dynamic penalty compared to the closed coupe. In fact, the 16M simultaneously reduced the new model’s kerb weight by 80kgs, thanks to lightened front and rear bumpers, forged alloy wheels exclusive to the model and re-worked front suspension and steering. Even the wheel bolts were made in titanium, testament to Ferrari's comittment to weight saving.

The car was sold out to favoured clients as one would expect with a limited edition model, but the media still got the opportunity to remind the public of car's dynamic prowess and what they couldn't buy.

"Without a back-to-back comparison it was impossible to tell for sure, but the Spider felt as composed and well balanced as the coupé – user-friendly, but lairy-on-demand too. There’s a little understeer if you push too hard too early in a tight corner, but get the nose tucked in, then feed in the power and the tail will come into play. That lopping the roof off the Scuderia hasn’t ruined the driving experience of this track-honed machine is pretty impressive. But the fact that it’s actually intensified it thanks to the extra noise and the buzz of fresh-air motoring – with no loss of poise – is simply astonishing. The Scuderia 16M really is a brilliant car."
