Overall history of the Ferrari F40
Ferrari’s F40 is a landmark car. Recognisable for its distinctive shape, record breaking top speed, and undeniable presence, it rolled out of Maranello an icon. A successor to Ferrari’s 250 GTO, and 288 GTO, and built to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary, its job was to take everything Maranello had learned and apply it to the best road car the firm had produced to date. At launch it was the company’s most expensive, and powerful road car on sale. It was also the last Ferrari personally signed off by company founder Enzo Ferrari.
The F40 mixed hardcore road and race technology to create a high performance, exciting car for those looking for a cut above the rest. Of course, Ferrari had history in making models that mixed the two, but the F40 was a next level machine. Its 2.9-litre turbocharged V8 engine produced a staggering 471bhp, an incredible power figure for the late 80s. Power, however, wasn’t enough for the car to attain its legendary status. It was also light - thanks to a body made of aluminium, carbon fibre, and kevlar; plastic windows, a tubular steel chassis, no mod cons inside and more or less. The resulting 1,100kg (claimed) car combined with turbo power was nothing short of incredible.
Its performance figures were outstanding for the time, and still stack up today, but it was notably the first production car to top 200mph without modification. If you have not driven an F40 - the "enthusiasm" with which the cars comes on boost and in all but grippy conditions in the lower gears and cause potential traction issues will surprise you. These are thrilling proper analogue tools which require skill and respect in equal measure - no driver aids here!
Over the F40’s life two stand out changes were made. The first was a catalytic converter addition to the engine in 1990 to meet American emissions regulations. The second was the addition of adjustable suspension to change the car’s ground clearance when required.
1,315 F40s were produced between 1987 and 1992, though not all were standard road cars.
