Exact Description of this Specific Motorcar

Overall history of the Ferrari F40

Ferrari’s F40 is a landmark car. Recognisable for its distinctive shape, record breaking top speed, and undeniable presence, it rolled out of Maranello an icon. A successor to Ferrari’s 250 GTO, and 288 GTO, and built to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary, its job was to take everything Maranello had learned and apply it to the best road car the firm had produced to date. At launch it was the company’s most expensive, and powerful road car on sale. It was also the last Ferrari personally signed off by company founder Enzo Ferrari.

The F40 mixed hardcore road and race technology to create a high performance, exciting car for those looking for a cut above the rest. Of course, Ferrari had history in making models that mixed the two, but the F40 was a next level machine. Its 2.9-litre turbocharged V8 engine produced a staggering 471bhp, an incredible power figure for the late 80s. Power, however, wasn’t enough for the car to attain its legendary status. It was also light - thanks to a body made of aluminium, carbon fibre, and kevlar; plastic windows, a tubular steel chassis, no mod cons inside and more or less. The resulting 1,100kg (claimed) car combined with turbo power was nothing short of incredible.

Its performance figures were outstanding for the time, and still stack up today, but it was notably the first production car to top 200mph without modification. If you have not driven an F40 - the "enthusiasm" with which the cars comes on boost and in all but grippy conditions in the lower gears and cause potential traction issues will surprise you. These are thrilling proper analogue tools which require skill and respect in equal measure - no driver aids here!

Over the F40’s life two stand out changes were made. The first was a catalytic converter addition to the engine in 1990 to meet American emissions regulations. The second was the addition of adjustable suspension to change the car’s ground clearance when required. F40s without these modifications, ‘non cat, non adjust’ cars, are more desirable.

1,315 F40s were produced between 1987 and 1992, though not all were standard road cars. A limited number of LM race prepped cars, and more potent Competitzione cars were produced, the latter boasting 691bhp.

General description of Make and/or Model of this Motorcar:

Probably the best concours F40 in existence - extensive successful Concours participation

We know this car rather well in that we found it for it's second and last owner - arch F40 enthusiast - Brian Grove. Brian wanted to buy the very best F40 available with concours participation in mind and spent 3 years travelling around Europe and inspecting 20 cars untill we introduced him to #90353 which met his exacting standards. The video at the bottom of this description tells you all this directly from Brian.

The car was delivered new to it's first custodian via Maranello UK.  This made the car 1 of 78 UK delivered F40s and therefore unsually originally supplied with an MPH speedometer. The first owner was Manfred Speiss who owned the car from 1991 when it was new until late 2018. During his tenure the car covered a mere 2651 miles in his 27 year ownership, but the extensive billing documentation on file with Ferrari Classiche dealer Eberlein, suggests maintenance was carried out regardless.

When Brian acquired the car it had an inspection and subequent maintenance by DK Engineering. The car has earned huge plaudits on the Concours field and DK have maintained the car throughout to perfect driving condition. This car is not be confused with a low mileage car which has not had regular fastidious maintenance.

Finding a low mileage standard car is one thing, but to find a low mileage as it left the factory in Concours condition is another thing all together! In fact it would be unrealistic to assume that you could reproduce an F40 to this as-it-left-the-factory standard today simply because some of the OEM parts are NLA, and the keenest judges may well be able to tell the difference over seemingly authentic repro components.

The best F40 available anywhere for a serious collector.
